Two women pitched tents at the forks of Troublesome Creek and started the first rural settlement school in America, teaching and boarding children in a county with almost no schooling. Its collectors also wrote down ballads that had come from Britain and survived here in older forms than in Britain itself, which is a large part of why the region got a reputation for preserving things.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
