Bloody Harlan and the Brookside strike
1931
Harlan County, Kentucky
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Coal operators here ran the county outright, hiring deputies, evicting strikers and shooting organisers, and it took until the 1970s to finish the fight. Florence Reece wrote Which Side Are You On? On a calendar while gun thugs searched her house. A film crew followed the 1973 Brookside strike, with women blocking the road at dawn, and won an Academy Award for it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
