Appalshop films the place itself
1969
Whitesburg, Kentucky
A federal job-training scheme put cameras in the hands of young people in a coalfield town so they could learn a trade, and instead of leaving they turned it into a film and radio outfit that has documented the region from inside for over fifty years. It matters because almost everything else ever filmed here was made by people passing through.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
