A life insurance company put a radio station on the air from its own building to sell policies, with call letters standing for We Shield Millions. Six weeks later it began a Saturday night barn dance, and an announcer following an hour of network grand opera introduced it as the Grand Ole Opry. It has run every week since, the longest-running radio programme in the world.
