Winthrop Beach and the Five Sisters breakwaters
1900
Winthrop, Massachusetts

The narrow gauge railroad reached Winthrop Beach in the 1890s and city crowds followed, the same pattern that made Revere Beach. Charles Eliot laid out the shore reservation and its parkway for the Metropolitan Parks Commission, with the land taken in 1899 and the work finished about 1900. Five offshore breakwaters known locally as the Five Sisters take the worst of the storm swell before it reaches the houses.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
