Wicahapi, the burial mounds above the Mississippi

Six burial mounds sit on the bluff here, the oldest raised roughly 2,500 years ago and used by Mdewakanton Dakota people into the historic period. At least 31 more mounds on this bluff were destroyed by construction in the late 1800s, some of them dug open for their contents. The city made a park of what was left in 1893 and called it Indian Mounds. In May 2025 Saint Paul adopted the recommendation of state Tribal Historic Preservation Officers and renamed it Wicahapi, meaning cemetery.
