Missouri's southern line was meant to run straight along the 36 degree 30 minute parallel, which would have put this corner in Arkansas Territory. John Hardeman Walker, a planter at Little Prairie who owned a great deal of it, argued that his neighbours had more in common with the Mississippi river towns upstream than with anywhere in Arkansas, and lobbied in Jefferson City and Washington until the line was dropped about fifty miles to the 36th parallel. The state has been that shape ever since.
