Franklin Roosevelt came for the eighty-eight-degree water three years after polio took his legs, found he could stand in it, and bought the place. He built a six-room cottage, ran a foundation for other patients, and learned the rural South here in a way that shows in what he later did to it. He died in that cottage in April 1945, sitting for a portrait that was never finished and is still on the easel.
