Where three men left Powell and were never seen again

Three of Powell's men had had enough. On August 28, 1869, starving and looking at a rapid they judged unrunnable, William Dunn and the Howland brothers climbed out of the gorge to walk to the Mormon settlements. The men who stayed in the boats ran the rapid without trouble and were out of the canyon the next day. The three who left were killed on the plateau above, and by whom is still argued: Powell was told the Shivwits had mistaken them for prospectors, while later evidence points at settlers who took them for federal agents investigating Mountain Meadows. The rapid is called Separation.
