Thirty missionaries sent from Salt Lake built an adobe stockade at the meadows the Spanish had named Las Vegas, on the strength of the springs. They lasted two years before mosquitoes, poor harvests and a lead mine dispute drove them out. The walls are the oldest European building in Nevada.
