Where spring break was invented
1960
Fort Lauderdale Beach, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
College swimmers had wintered here since the 1930s, but the 1960 film Where the Boys Are, shot at this corner bar and the beach outside it, turned Fort Lauderdale into the national headquarters of spring break: 50,000 students a year, then 350,000. In 1985 the city decided it had had enough and broke up with the whole institution, which decamped to Daytona and points south. The Elbo Room is still pouring.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
