Watts votes itself out of existence
1926
Watts, Los Angeles, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Watts began as a ranching settlement in the late nineteenth century and grew fast once the railroads and the depot arrived, enough to run as an independent city of its own. In 1926 it consolidated with Los Angeles and stopped being one. By the 1940s it had become a mainly working class African American neighbourhood, wedged against Lynwood, South Gate and Huntington Park on the east and Willowbrook to the south.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
