Peter and Rosanna Wentz took up the farm in 1744 and built the stone house in 1758 in the Pennsylvania German manner. Washington used it as his headquarters twice in October 1777: first on the second and third, while the plan for the Battle of Germantown was being drawn up, and again after the army fell back from that defeat. He dictated twenty five letters and eight orders from the property. Montgomery County bought it in 1969 and the land has been farmed without a break since 1744.
