Thoreau spent two years in a ten-by-fifteen hut on Emerson's woodlot, walked into town regularly and had his mother do some laundry, facts his critics enjoy and which do not much damage the book. He also spent a night in jail over the poll tax, and wrote Civil Disobedience about it, which Gandhi and King both read.
