Village of Euclid v. Ambler Realty makes zoning constitutional

Ambler Realty owned 68 acres in the village of Euclid and wanted to sell it for industry. Euclid's new zoning ordinance blocked that, and Ambler sued, arguing the village had taken most of the land's value. The Supreme Court ruled in 1926 that zoning was a legitimate use of the police power, which is why almost every American city is zoned the way it is, and lawyers still call the ordinary kind Euclidean zoning.
