Salem was commissioned in 1949, too late for the war she was designed for, and she is the last heavy cruiser ever to enter service and the only one left. She served in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and was decommissioned after ten years. She is tied up as a museum ship at the Quincy yard that built her.
