New York required Black men to own $250 of property to vote, so Gerrit Smith gave away 120,000 Adirondack acres to some three thousand of them. The settlement they built here was called Timbuctoo. John Brown bought a farm alongside it to help them work land most were not equipped to farm, and asked to be buried here, his body was brought back after Harpers Ferry, and twelve of his men lie beside him.
