Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School
1825
Catskill, New York

Cole came up the river, walked into the Catskills and painted what he saw, and three canvases in a New York shop window made his name overnight. What followed was the first American school of painting, landscape treated as a subject worth the scale of history painting, at the moment the country was deciding whether its wilderness was an embarrassment or the point.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
