The idea had existed for twenty years and did not work. Gideon Sundback, working for the Hookless Fastener Company here, redesigned the teeth so they interlocked properly and built the machine that could make them by the mile. It sold badly until the army bought it for flying suits, and got its name from a galosh: B.F. Goodrich liked the noise the thing made and called the boot the Zipper.
