The WOR tower, tenth tallest thing in the world until a plane clipped it

WOR put up a 760 foot lattice mast on the Palisades in 1949 to carry its FM and television signals, 420 tons of steel that ranked as the tenth tallest structure on earth when it was finished. Broadcasting moved to the Empire State Building at the start of 1953 and the tower simply stayed up. On 8 November 1956 a Beechcraft Model 18 hit the top of it, knocking the peak off, and the plane crashed and killed the four people aboard. What was left of the tower came down shortly after.
