The Wilmington Oil Field, the third biggest in the country
1932
Wilmington, California

Found in 1932 and holding roughly three billion barrels, it runs under San Pedro Bay, Wilmington and Long Beach and ranks third in the United States for cumulative production. Pulling the oil out dropped the ground above it by more than twenty feet, sinking docks and streets, until operators began pumping seawater back into the reservoir in the 1950s to stop the subsidence.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
