The Washington Elm, a legend Cambridge kept for a century

Washington took command of the Continental Army at Cambridge on 3 July 1775, and by the 1830s the town had decided it happened under one particular elm on the Common. Historians have never found evidence for the tree, but the story stuck hard enough that the elm became a civic shrine. It came down in 1923 after about 210 years, and its wood was cut up and posted to towns and schools across the country as relics.
