The city bought an 800 bed jail barge to relieve crowding on Rikers Island, built at a Louisiana shipyard for 161 million dollars and moored off Hunts Point in 1992. Detainees and staff called it the Boat. It held people for three decades, and in 2025 it was cut free of its dock and towed back to Louisiana to be scrapped.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
