Stateville prison and the last panopticon cellblock in America

Stateville opened at Crest Hill outside Joliet in 1925 and included circular cellblocks built on Jeremy Bentham's panopticon plan, tiers of cells facing inward around a single armed tower so that every man could be watched and none could tell when. All but one were demolished. The last, F House, held prisoners until 2016 and was the only cellblock of its kind still in use anywhere in the country. It was reopened briefly in 2020 to isolate men with COVID.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
