The Uniroyal Giant Tire, a World's Fair Ferris wheel parked on I-94
1966
Interstate 94, Allen Park, Michigan
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
United States Rubber built this 80 foot tire for the 1964 New York World's Fair, and for two seasons it turned as a working Ferris wheel with gondolas bolted around the tread. The architects were Shreve, Lamb and Harmon, the firm behind the Empire State Building. When the fair closed the company cut the tire into 188 pieces, trucked it to its sales office in Allen Park and stood it back up beside the freeway in 1966. The gondolas and the machinery never came with it, so what drivers pass now is the shell of a fairground ride.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
