The TWA Flight Center, Saarinen's concrete wings
1962

Eero Saarinen shaped the TWA terminal at Idlewild as a thin concrete shell carried on four Y shaped piers, meant to read as a bird about to leave the ground. It opened in 1962, shortly after he died. Inside are tube shaped passenger corridors, a sunken lounge and split flap boards. Jets outgrew the gates and the terminal closed in 2001. The building reopened in 2019 as a hotel lobby, with a Lockheed Constellation parked outside serving drinks.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
