Eero Saarinen laid out twenty five buildings around two rectangular lakes on 320 acres, with landscaping by Thomas Church, and President Eisenhower spoke at the opening in May 1956. Alfred Sloan and Charles Kettering wanted research kept apart from the rest of the company, and the campus they got became the template for the corporate office park. It is a National Historic Landmark.
