Earl Tupper's airtight bowls sold badly in shops because nobody could work out the seal. Brownie Wise, a single mother selling them at home demonstrations, outsold the stores so thoroughly that Tupper pulled the product from retail entirely and made her vice president, then fired her in 1958 and bought back her stock.
