The Thea Foss Waterway, named for a woman who started with one rowboat

Thea Foss, a Norwegian immigrant, bought a rowboat in 1889 and rented it to fishermen on this inlet, a business that grew into Foss Maritime and one of the largest tug fleets on the West Coast. The channel was called the City Waterway for most of a century before Tacoma renamed it for her. It divides downtown from the port and spent generations as a working industrial cut before the cleanup.
