The Cairo boycott and the United Front
Commercial Avenue, Cairo, Illinois
![]()
After a Black soldier was found hanged in the city jail in 1967 and the death was ruled a suicide his family never accepted, Black residents began a boycott of white-owned stores that ran for years, organised through the United Front. Armed white vigilantes and the housing project traded gunfire over many nights. The boycott broke the downtown economy, and much of what closed then never reopened.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
