The students choose the banana slug
University of California, Santa Cruz
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
UC Santa Cruz had no grades and no team sports for years, and when it joined the NCAA the chancellor picked sea lions as the mascot. The students held a referendum and voted overwhelmingly for the bright yellow slug that lives on the forest floor of the campus, on the grounds that it was slow, flexible and had no natural enemies. The administration gave in.
