The Black Organization of Students formed in 1968 on a campus that sat in a majority Black city and enrolled almost no Black students. After the administration gave an unsatisfactory answer to a list of twelve demands, members occupied Conklin Hall in February 1969 and renamed it Liberation Hall. The university agreed to recruit and support Black and Puerto Rican students, and Rutgers-Newark went on to become one of the most diverse universities in the country.
