The Steel Pier diving horse
1929
Atlantic City, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The great amusement pier ran out a thousand feet over the ocean with a circus, big bands and its signature act: a horse with a woman on its back that leapt from a sixty-foot tower into a tank of water, several times a day, for forty years. One rider kept performing the dive after the fall detached her retinas and left her blind. The act ended in the 1970s under pressure it had earned.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
