The St. Marys River, the border Spain and the United States settled on
1795
Nassau County, Florida
Pinckney's Treaty in 1795 put the line between Spanish Florida and the United States down the middle of this river, from its source to the Atlantic. The surveyors paddled up it hunting for that source, could not agree which branch counted, and ended the argument by raising a marker still known as Ellicott's Mound. Through the 1800s the same water carried rafts of longleaf pine down to the coastal mills. It runs black with tannins out of the Okefenokee and still separates Georgia from Florida.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
