The St. Augustine Monster washes ashore

Two boys cycling on Anastasia Island found a five ton lump of pale flesh in the sand on 30 November 1896. DeWitt Webb, a local doctor who had founded the town's historical society, measured it at roughly eighteen feet, decided it was an enormous octopus and shipped tissue and photographs to Yale, where Addison Verrill gave it the name Octopus giganteus. DNA work more than a century later showed it was part of a whale. It is the earliest of the beached masses later nicknamed globsters.
