The Hodag of Rhinelander
1893
Rhinelander, Wisconsin
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Timber cruiser Gene Shepard announced in 1893 that he had captured a horned, spike-backed beast in the swamps, exhibited it in a dim tent at the county fair, and confessed the hoax only when the Smithsonian threatened to send scientists. Rhinelander responded by adopting the monster wholesale: the Hodag is on the schools, the chamber of commerce, the water tower and a giant statue outside the visitor center, the rare hoax that became a hometown.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
