The SS Meteor, last of the whalebacks
1896
Superior, Wisconsin

Superior's shipyards built the whalebacks, cigar-shaped steel freighters that shed water over rounded decks, a design of Alexander McDougall's that hauled ore and grain around the lakes for decades. The Meteor of 1896 is the last one left anywhere, hauled ashore in her builder's hometown as a museum. The design lost out to bigger conventional hulls, but for a while the future of shipping looked like a floating cigar.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
