The Shinnecock Nation

The people who were here before Southampton still hold a neck of land beside it, and held onto it through three centuries of the town's growth around them. Shinnecock men crewed the whaleships out of Sag Harbor. A railroad causeway drowned much of their bay. Federal recognition came only in 2010, after a fight of decades. The powwow each Labor Day is among the oldest in the East.
