The seven arch limestone bridge that ended the ford at Lockport

Farmers on the west bank had to drive through the Des Plaines to reach Lockport's merchants until the county approved a bridge in March 1868 for $4,000. It was laid up in locally quarried limestone in blocks eight to twelve inches deep, probably by Julius Scheibe, the mason behind much of the town's stonework and a highway commissioner while it was being built. It carried traffic until 1971. A storm wrecked it in March 2011 and the city took it down that spring.
