The Methuen bridge laid without mortar in 1735
1735
Hampshire Road over the Spicket River, Methuen, Massachusetts
Sands Bridge carries Hampshire Road over the Spicket River on two stone arches with nothing between the stones. No mortar, no cement, just cut sandstone cut to fit and held by its own weight, with parts of the structure dating to 1735. It was the crossing for traffic between Methuen and Salem, New Hampshire, and it is still there, which is a long run for a piece of colonial road engineering that predates the country.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
