The Santería case from Hialeah
1993
Hialeah, Florida
When a Santería church announced plans to open here, Hialeah passed ordinances against ritual animal sacrifice written so narrowly they touched almost nothing else. The Supreme Court struck them down 9 to 0 in 1993: laws that target one religion's practice fail, whatever the stated reason. A storefront faith brought from Cuba ended up defining American religious-freedom law.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
