The Richmond shipyard hospital that became Kaiser Permanente
1942
Richmond, California
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Henry Kaiser and the physician Sidney Garfield ran a hospital on Cutting Boulevard for the shipyard workforce, paid for by a fixed deduction from wages rather than by the visit. That prepaid arrangement outlived the war and grew into Kaiser Permanente. The building treated the surrounding neighbourhoods until 1995 and still stands on its original site.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
