The Richmond bread riot
April 2, 1863
Richmond, Virginia
Several hundred women, hungry after two years of blockade and speculation, marched on the shops shouting for bread and began breaking windows. Jefferson Davis climbed onto a wagon, emptied his pockets to the crowd and told them they had fifteen minutes before the militia fired. They dispersed. The papers were asked not to report it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
