Albany was founded by women with shotguns turning back the garbage wagons

Berkeley arranged to dump its garbage on the rural flats to the north, and the few hundred people living there in the settlement of Ocean View lost every legal argument against it. On the morning of 1 April 1908 a crowd of residents, most of them women, stood in the road near San Pablo and Buchanan with shotguns and turned the wagons back. Ocean View voted itself into a city that September, banned outside dumping by ordinance, and changed its name to Albany the following year.
