The Pure Oil station built to look like an English cottage

Before the 1920s a filling station was treated as a fire hazard and kept away from where people lived. Pure Oil's answer, worked out by its construction engineer Carl August Petersen and adopted as a company trademark in 1927, was a cheap Tudor Revival cottage with a steep blue roof that a residential street would tolerate. This one went up in 1937 on Route 38 at Fifth Street, sold fuel until 1995 and now sells garden supplies.
