The THUMS Islands, oil rigs dressed up as resorts

Four artificial islands built in 1965 to drill the East Wilmington field from inside the harbour, then landscaped with palms, waterfalls and sound walls so the view from shore would not look industrial. They are the only decorated oil islands in the United States. The name comes from the Texaco, Humble, Union, Mobil and Shell consortium that won the lease, and each island is named for an astronaut who died in service.
