The Plainfield filling station from the years Route 66 rode the Lincoln Highway

The Lincoln Highway was the first paved road through Plainfield and became US 30 in the 1920s. From 1940 to 1957 US 66 ran concurrently along the same pavement, so traffic through this corner was heavy enough to keep a chain of filling stations busy. Standard Oil built this one in 1932, blending its cottage style with a southwestern one, and cut the ornament back because of the Depression. The red, white and blue paint has been put back.
