The potato harvest recess
Presque Isle, Aroostook County, Maine
Shanghai88 · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons
Aroostook County schools still close for up to three weeks every fall so students can work the potato harvest, a custom formalized in the 1940s when the county grew more potatoes than any place in America. Harvesters replaced most of the hand-picking. The recess survives because the farms still need the labor and the county decided the tradition was worth defending. Somewhere under the northern lights a teenager is grading your fries.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
