The Poillon-Seguine-Britton House, a 1695 landmark demolished in 1996
1996
Great Kills, Staten Island
Jacques Poillon built the stone core of this farmhouse around 1695, Joseph Seguine added a second storey in the 1840s, and Richard Britton expanded it once more in 1930. The city made it a landmark in 1981 and the National Register listed it in 1984. Two fires struck in 1989, the owners twice applied to tear it down, and in 1996 the Buildings Department issued a demolition permit without the Landmarks Commission signing off. The house was razed within days and its landmark designation was formally rescinded the following year.
