The pepperoni roll
1927
Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia

An Italian baker in Fairmont put pepperoni inside a bread roll in 1927 for miners who needed a lunch that would not spoil down the shaft and did not need a plate. The grease soaks into the bread, which is the entire point. It is the closest thing West Virginia has to a state food and every gas station in the north of the state sells its own.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
